Introduction

Economic consulting firms are generally known for the data-intensive and rigorously analytic nature of their work. While Bates White is no different, the firm seeks to differentiate itself through its bright and passionate people. It’s a firm that invests heavily in professional development and building a close-knit, collaborative culture. Past summer interns praise the “very positive culture” and say, “As interns, we were put on real cases and did real work for clients.”

Intern Reviews

  • “My quality of life was extremely good. The firm offered multiple dinners with management and other employees at the firm. We had multiple speaker series with the [Managing Partner] and our testifying experts. In addition, we had plenty of opportunities to interact with other practices in the firm and learn about the work people at all levels of the firm do. I will say the average hours range from 40-50, depending on the intern.”
  • “Work-life balance is definitely considered important. Almost all the full-time employees I worked with took at least one day of PTO during the 10 weeks I was an intern. When a project had a big deadline, like an expert report submission, members of that team would go on flex time afterward, meaning they'd have a lighter workload following that crunch time. There were also many social events and a great sense of community.”
  • “Firm culture is very friendly, supportive, and understanding. The company really encourages collaboration and conversation among employees. The firm prides itself on being an enjoyable place to work, and part of that is that people generally work 45 hours per week.”
  • “There is a very positive culture at Bates White, and there is certainly a goal of protecting a work/life balance. I was required to work 40 hours a week but often worked more, but those extra hours were usually my choice since I enjoyed the work. The culture is very supportive, and I felt like I could ask anyone for help.

Getting Hired Here

  • “My hiring process was two rounds of interviews. The first round was behavioral and case study. The second round included meeting a manager at the firm, a second case study, a meeting with HR, and a lunch with an economist and consultant at the firm. The difficulty of the interviews was medium or average. I had good interactions with all my interviewers. I cannot speak to how selective the hiring process was.”
  • “The interview process seemed like a fair balance between selective and reasonable. There were two rounds, one of which was in person and longer. Both interviews had case studies and behavioral aspects, which I appreciated.”
  • “Everyone who interviewed me was passionate about their work and eager to talk to me and hear what I had to say. Some questions were challenging, but none were impossible to answer. I felt as if the interview as a whole was very engaging.”
  • “Very straightforward. In-person for the second round. Not an extremely difficult interview/case study, but the company is quite selective in choosing summers.”
